D.C. Public School Score Poorly
The article written by Dion Haynes of the Washington Post and picked up on the D.C. Education Blog reveals that, compared to last year, a larger number of elementary schools will fail to meet Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Law.
But this is only part of the story. This is the first year for the administration of a new standardized test which replaced the Stanford-9. What I remember is that DCPS did a horrible job in administering the exam. First, they were late in providing examples of what the test would look like. Then when it came to giving it to students the materials did not show up on time. The manipulatives that were supposed to be used for the math portion came after the kids completed that section.
It is quite possible that this year's test scores are more a reflection on the school system then our students.
P.S. Good to see Mr. Haynes back. He must of been on vacation the other day.
