Just In Time For The Fall Election
Diana Jean Schemo of the New York Times says that Republicans yesterday unveiled a plan to spend $100 million on private school vouchers across the country for students who are attending chronically failing schools.
The proposed legislation comes on the heels of a controversial U.S. Department of Education report which shows that, once corrections are done for differences in socio-economic status, public school students and private school students score about the same on standardized tests. The exception was in 8th grade math where private school students fared better.
Education Secretary Spellings played down the significance of the report when announcing the new voucher plan. She is under heavy criticism for her department releasing the report on a Friday during the Summer in an attempt, some say, to hide its findings.
