1 Defeat/1 Major Victory
Last evening the D.C. Council could not agree to ask voters for a change to the city's charter which would have guaranteed each student a quality education. The reason: the representatives know that DCPS does not provide quality and therefore understand that they will be sued over the issue. I guess the Council, Washington Post Editors, and a few well-known bloggers forgot about the welfare of our children during all of the debate.
However, we were provided with a surprise turnaround by the Bush Administration on human rights regarding the "War on Terror." Now that the Supreme Court has said that we cannot just lock people up and throw away the key (or worse) when it comes to prisoners, the Defense Department has said that it will follow "baseline" Geneva Conventions regarding captured individuals. This new policy even applies to those arrested and sent to prisons in other countries.
