Supreme Court Rejects Vermont Campaign Contribution Limits

As Linda Greenhouse reports, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Vermont's campaign contribution limits of $400 over 2 years to anyone running for statewide office as a restriction of the right to freedom of speech. Then why do they allow contribution limits at all and why did they approve the McCain Feingold Law which prevents non-profit groups from mentioning a candidate's name 60 days before a federal election?

I think Justice Kennedy got it right with his comment that the court's involvement in campaign finance reform had done more harm than good.
