Small Schools
In today's Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher argues that closing small DC public schools may be the wrong direction to go. He says that it is these facilities that can keep a close eye on their students and provide them with the guidance to make something of themselves.
But although this argument makes sense at first glance remember that author Diane Ravitch does not agree with this point of view, specifically when it comes to high school. She has pointed out that small high school (in the 200 to 400 student body range) often do not have the financial means nor the population of kids to be able to offer the diversity of programs available in larger institutions. She says students suffer as a result.
