It's Been Some Week
Hard for a blogger interested in current affairs to keep up. Today's highlight is that Mayor Fenty continues to assemble his team to fix all that is wrong with D.C. schools. According to the Washington Post's David Nakamura, Mr. Fenty will name Allen Lew to oversee the $2 billion program to repair crumbling school buildings. Mr. Lew has a bit of experience having built the D.C. convention center and is now in charge of the new baseball stadium. That Mayor must be a very persuasive person landing this individual after convincing Michelle Rhee to become Chancellor.
Perhaps the Mayor is on the right track. New York State just announced that student test scores in math have jumped up tremendously this year, led by a double-digit improvement in results in Manhattan. Of course, Mayor Bloomburg has said that this is due directly to his take over of the public system.
Its easy to miss in all this education news the exciting victory for freedom given to us by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. The justices ruled against the Bush Administration and the "War on Terror" in saying that American citizens cannot be locked up without being charged with a crime. Of course this is exactly what this county has done with 3 individuals.
Finally, the Institute for Justice has an extremely kind write-up of the work of Mrs. Swedenburg who died the other day.
