D.C. Private School Vouchers
Did I have the children of Nakia Hammond, as profiled today in a Washington Post article by Jay Mathews, in mind when I fought 6 years ago to get an appointment with Colbert King so I could advocate for school vouchers for the District? Well of course, not these kids specifically, but the answer is yes!
If you want to see the power of school choice first hand then read about Ms. Hammond's 4 hour a day trips on the bus so that her children can obtain a private school education that would have cost her $18,000 per year (which is more than her annual income) for free. The piece also contains some good demographic statistics about the population of kids who are enrolled in the program.
Those of us who fought for school vouchers for the city can be extremely proud today of what we accomplished.
