The Mark Lerner Award

At the Saturday night faculty performance of the William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts the three founders announced that they had created new annual student awards. One would be for academics, another for citizenship. A third award, of course, is for the student who excelled in the arts. Each was named after someone who had special significance to the school's leadership. For example, awards were named in honor of the fathers of the principal of the lower school and the arts partnership director.

The final award, the one for the best overall student, was named after me. It was a complete shock. Apparently, my wife and kids had known about this for a month.

It was such a tremendous honor that I did not know what to say and I still am speechless.
