Don't Know Whether To Laugh Or Cry
So D.C. School Superintendent gave his state of the schools speech last night. Dion Haynes and Theola Labbe of the Washington Post describe the scene:
Meanwhile, as people stood on their feet applauding, more and more students escape DCPS for charter and voucher schools and the city continues to socially promote students who cannot read, write, or perform basic math in buildings that are about to collapse.
I'm frankly shocked that Mr. Janey has put so much effort into saving his job. He does not come across as someone who cares.
The speech was preceded by an upbeat video presentation that included testimonials from city leaders and principals, clips of students conducting science experiments and a bouncy soundtrack of Patti LaBelle's "New Day." The final image was Janey, who said: "You're going to feel so good to dispel the contempt people have for Washington, D.C., schools." When the video ended, Janey emerged from the wings, approached a podium on the stage and smiled as the audience gave him a standing ovation.I have to wonder how much time and money was spent on the video. Too bad he didn't come out in a boxing uniform running up the steps of the auditorium's stairs.
