WEDJ To Expand
I'm thrilled to announce that the William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts is going to nearly double its current space during the 2006-2007 school year. This was not a simple feat. In order to rent an additional 20,000 square feet on the 1st floor of 705 Edgewood Street we had to:
1. Receive approval from the D.C. Public Charter School Board to open our high school 2 years ahead of schedule. This involved testifying twice before the Board and submitting pages of requested information in 2 separate rounds.
2. Obtain a 1.5 million dollar loan from a local bank.
3. Secure a 1 million dollar loan guarantee from the D.C. state education office.
4. Sign a lease amendment with our landlord at the same time that another charter school bid to purchase our entire building. Those negotiations failed and we reached an agreement a couple of weeks ago.
In the meantime 450 students have signed up for next year. We can accommodate 400. Not bad for a school entering only its 3rd year.
