The Pope, Communism, And The State Of Maryland
Anne Applebaum demonstrates today the power Pope John Paul II had over communism in Eastern Europe and why she is a Pulitzer Prize winner.
Her comments are a reminder of what life was like under state control. Maryland moved closer to mirroring the Soviet Union in requiring private companies to spend a minimum of 8% of their payroll costs on healthcare for their workers. The bill is aimed at Wal-Mart. Sounds like a scene right out of Atlas Shrugged. So if the retailer can provide health insurance at lower rates then I guess they have to purchase a more expensive policy. You don't have to be from A Constrained Vision to guess what happens to the price of healthcare insurance for all of us when requirements such as this are established. Perhaps next year Maryland will decide that the figure needs to be 10%.
Governor Robert L. Ehrlich says he will veto the bill but there looks like their are enough votes in the legislature to overturn it.
