D.C. Board of Education Closes Charter School

The Board voted last night to close the Village Learning Center. It appears that those in charge of the school used its credit cards to pay for personal expenses and this was only one of the many management issues that were identified.

Of course, now again we will have to hear comments from those that will say that this action just demonstrates the problems associated with charter schools. You know the argument. Because these institutions lack central oversight they will misappropriate public money and once they are caught and forced to close it is only the kids that suffer.

But the closing of poor schools is a central tenent of school choice. A true educational marketplace will mean that good schools expand and poor schools contract. Afterall, we don't want kids stuck in places that do not teach. Is DCPS listening?
