DC's Next School Chief
Should not be Carl Cohn. Some of his negotiating demands appear to make sense such as the school system's CFO reporting to him and not the city. And I admit that I like many of his initiatives which include the goal of all students reading by the 3rd grade and his emphasis on after-school tutoring and other additional resources to help kids who are behind catch up. But his stance that he will remain in the job for only a year does not provide the level of commitment and stability needed to repair a system that is broken on every level. His hiring would send a message to the education bureaucracy that if you can hold on for 12 months your position will be safe and change will not be necessary. The Washington Post agrees with my position.
