Charter Schools Finally Get A Facilities Break
Dion Haynes reports today that DCPS is in trouble next year to the tune of a 40 million dollar deficit. Therefore Superintendent Janey has proposed, and the Board of Education has approved, to make half of that up by closing 1 million square feet of classroom space and renting it out to charter schools. That would help a lot of charters desperate for a place to go.
By the way, I don't think DCPS is being honest in saying that they have lost 10,000 students over the last 5 years. I believe its close to double that. 17,000 kids are now in charter schools and 1,700 use private school vouchers.
