The End Of Vouchers In Washington DC

Washington D.C.'s private school voucher program is in trouble. Although it is currently serving 1,700 students, when it comes to high school there are few slots for these kids. This means that students who have been using these scholarships will have to exit the program and return to traditional schools or charters. For example, this year more then 20 families could not find a private high school to attend.

The leadership team of the William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts has offered to create a private high school in the Fall for these children. We have met with Sally Sachar, CEO and President of the Washington Scholarship Fund on multiple occasions to try and make this a reality. The problem is that at $7,500 per kid we cannot afford to open a school to serve them.
The end result of this situation is that more than 80 students who now utilize vouchers will not be able to participate in the program in September.
