Come Support WEDJ
This just in. The D.C. Public Charter School Board has scheduled a hearing on Monday, January 23rd at 7:30 p.m. to consider the application of The William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts to expand to the 9th grade in the Fall. The meeting will be held at 3333 14th Street N.W., Suite 210.
The Doar School (or WEDJ as we call it) opened last year with about 150 pre-k through 5th grade students. This year we serve 230 students in grades pre-K through 6th and we will naturally go through 7th grade next year. But we also want to exceed the expansion plans spelled out in our charter by starting our high school in 2006. We are doing this for 2 important reasons. First and most importantly, we want to help as many D.C. school kids as we can. In 2 short years we have seen up-close what a truly integrated performing arts curriculum can do to develop the conceptual skills of young people. Also, by expanding to 9th grade we can control more of the building that we are in which would lead to us taking the entire space which equates to 75,000 square feet!
Please consider coming out to support us on January 23rd.
