Let's Just Call It Summer Vacation
Tracy Jan of the Boston Globe reports on why adding school days to the calendar due to snow days doesn't necessarily translate into more hours in the classroom for students:
Empty seats are already evident in classrooms from Arlington to Falmouth, as parents withdraw their children early for overnight camps, long-scheduled family vacations, and summer jobs. Many principals, expecting even fewer students to show next week, are giving a pass to students playing hooky, instructing teachers to note the absences but not mete out punishments.Meanwhile, here in Reston, Virginia, my wife sent an email to our high school's new principal complaining about all of the students who have been excused from class by their teachers for no reason except for the fact that they don't feel like teaching.
