Total Government Failure
E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post looks at what has happened in the wake of hurricane Katrina and sees a positive role for government. At least he is a consistent liberal. He is also wrong again. Dead wrong.
The preparation and recovery plans for this disaster are a total embarrassment. I could hardly watch the news last night and see the horror the people in New Orleans are going through. But you don't have to take my word for it. As reported by Josh White and Peter Whoriskey of the Washington Post:
"This is a national disgrace. FEMA has been here three days, yet there is no command and control," Ebbert [Terry Ebbert, head of New Orleans's emergency operations]told the Associated Press as he watched refugees evacuate the Superdome yesterday. "We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans. We have got a mayor who has been pushing and asking, but we're not getting supplies."
If the government can not be effective in an emergency of this magnitude then maybe there is no role for government at all.
