Analysis OF D.C. Superintendent Search
Yesterday a Washington Post editorial (almost certainly written by Colbert King) made fun of the fact that city leaders were seriously considering hiring a superintendent who lacks experience in education. Today, in the Outlook section of the same newspaper John Merrow looks at how other jurisdictions have tacked the problems associated with urban public education and comes to the opposite conclusion regarding the background of the new chief.
What's my opinion? (I know you would ask.) I think it doesn't really matter. We need a strong leader with a history of making tough decisions and acting extremely quickly without fear. When I was first hired to be a radiology director some people expressed worries that I could not be effective in my job because I was never an x-ray technologist (my background is in nuclear medicine, a modality within radiology). But the argument that I and others who supported me made was that I could hire the right people who could provide the expertise that I lacked. I have now held the same position in a variety of work environments for over 16 years.
