Anne Applebaum Wins Pulitzer Prize

Anne Applebaum, who I have written about before, won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction literature for her book Gulag. Mrs. Applebaum is a Washington Post columnist and served on committee that just announced that this year's Cato Institute Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty will be presented to Hernando de Soto. I remember reading an article about Mr. de Soto years ago in which he pointed out that the reason so many South American families conducted business only between themselves was that many of these countries lack strong private property laws to enforce contracts.

In her article today, the author concerns herself with the distinction between popular writers and those who appeal to finer tastes. Her topic is similar to the point I was making the other day about the magazines my high school teacher asked us to reference. He was concerned about the lack of research and low quality of writing that is evident in our popular magazines. Mrs. Applebaum says that the split between those who read Time and those who pick Harpers for their news may be dividing our society.
