President on Meet the Press

I watched the interview on Sunday. Although I know that Mr. Bush is not an articulate man I believe that he did lay out his view pretty clearly about why he still feels that the war in Iraq was justified. I think that pre-emptive war is wrong and that we have no right to attack anyone else unless this country is clearly threatened.

However, rational people can disagree over the specific threat posed by Saddam Hussein. What gets me angry is what the Democratic candidates for President are saying on the subject. They accuse the President of lying, of rushing to war, and of purposely slanting the evidence in support of taking action. I think that these are reckless statements. If young Americans are dying over there and the President really believed that this was an elective war then this would make him out to be one of the most immoral men on the face of the earth and I just don't see this in his nature.

Also, we have to reflect on his decision in the context of our times. 3,000 people died on 9/11/01 and the tragedy obviously changed the President's priorities. If Iraq had WMD's and was about to unleash them against the U.S. then many more Americans could have been killed. Most unfortunate is that this Country's leaders lost their focus long ago. The primary role of the federal government is to protect us. As the Cato Institute has pointed out, it is ironic and sad that on that September morning the President was in Florida talking about education at a local school. We can only wonder where we would be now if our representatives in Washington had concentrated their efforts on national defense and not matters which are constitutionally left to the jurisdiction of the states.
