Average Literacy Rates Sink For College Graduates

Sam Dillon reports in today's New York Times that those scoring at the proficient level fell almost 10 points, from 40% in 1992 to 31% in 1993. The article also points out that on the The National Assessment of Adult Literacy, the test given by the U.S. Department of Education, blacks and Asians showed gains while Hispanic scores dropped sharply. But with so many more people going to college I think we would expect to see a negative trend in literacy rates.
