I Know Only I Will Read This Post
Today is Mackinac Center Day. The Mackinac Center for Public Policy is the nation's leading state-based libertarian think tank and the place which offered a leadership conference back in 1993 which changed my life. Last year, on June 30th, the Center's executive director died in a plane crash and it was Joe Overton who helped me understand the significance of ethics in the exercise of your career.
Today I want to draw your attention to their post on the use of the Constitution's commerce clause to stop states from awarding tax rebates to selected businesses to as means of preventing them from moving to another state or country. I have always disliked the practice and view it as a taxpayer financed bribe that businesses are extorting from nervous politicians. The way to attract employers to a state is to maintain a generally low tax rate for both companies and individuals. As this commentary points out it is wrong for state officials to be in the business of picking winners and losers.
